About the Artist
Komatis
Komatis is a British-born painter of Greek nationality, who began his study of fine arts in England as a teenager. He subsequently moved to the US to study engineering at universities in Georgia and California. In some ways, Komatis has led parallel lives: one in the engineering world and one in the world of art. His use of his family’s original Greek surname “Komatis” as a nom de brosse has helped enforce this separation of identities between the two worlds.
The predominant focus of Komatis’ painting during the last twenty years has been figurative expressionism and, more recently, plein air landscape expressionism. The driving force of Komatis’ work has always been the use of powerful color and geometry, influenced by German Figurative Expressionism from the 1930’s, as well as the work of Mark Rothko. After moving to California in the 1980’s, Komatis was further inspired by the Bay Area figurative movement artists such as David Park and Richard Diebenkorn.
